THE TOWN OF SHERBORN, is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts located 18 miles southwest of Boston. It was settled in 1674, and is considered today to be much of a semi-rural community with over 50% open land. Sherborn began as a farming community and didn't develop any significant industry due to the lack of sufficient water power. Because of the abundance of farming land, Sherborn grew small cider mills from many large apple tree acreage and produced so much apple cider per season it exported it to places far East such as England and Belgium. Sherborn was also a stop for escaped slaves where old antique homes where used as part of the Underground Railroad. In the early 1900s, wealthy families moved into Sherborn taking advantage of the wide open spaces and built large estates. The ones remaining today are based along the Charles River. Around the year 2000, the downtown area went through expansion where they gained a new fire station, a skate park and many new stores. Public services are minimal with a small police force, a volunteer fire department and rescue squad although their forces are all highly skilled and trained. Homeowners rely on individual wells and septic systems and most housing are built on one, two or three acre lots.
