ALL ABOUT NEEDHAM
THE TOWN OF NEEDHAM, is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts and is a suburb of Boston to its south. It was first settled in 1680 with the purchase of land 4 by 5 miles for 10 pounds and 40 shillings worth of corn to Chief Nehoiden.
In 1857, the City of Boston began its enormous project to reclaim the bay by filling the tidewater flats of the Charles River with landfill that was obtained from the town of Needham. It took the railroad contractors’ 35 car train and 16 trips a day up until its completion in 1882. Filling after the Back Bay project continued into Kenmore Square in 1890 and in the Fens in 1900.
In the late 1930s and after World War II, Needham’s population grew over 50 percent and after the development of I-95/Route 128, Needham attracted many industrial, and technological companies. It is home to a large Coca-Cola bottling facility and Trader Joe’s packing plant. It is also home to Greater Boston’s large media markets with both the Boston Herald and Boston Globe, WCVB and transmitters for many other local media markets and FM stations.
Needham is a diverse community with its many single family homes, apartments, multi-family and condo living. It offers an easy commute to Boston for its many professional residents.
