ALL ABOUT ARLINGTON
THE TOWN OF ARLINGTON, was founded over 350 years ago and is located just 6 miles northwest of Boston, bordering Winchester, Medford, Somerville, Cambridge, Belmont and Lexington. Once known as Menotomy, named by the local Native Americans meaning "swift running water". There are a wide range of beautiful ponds, lakes and the widely known Mystic River.
Arlington played a prominent role on the first day of the American Revolution named the Battle of Menotomy or better known today as "Patriots Day". Paul Revere's famous ride took him through Menotomy and over half of the Patriots' blood was shed later that day there as well as in other nearby towns.
The famous drink Moxie was created and marketed in Arlington by Dr. Augustin Thompson in 1876 with its beginnings as a syrup to help cure many ailments and later changed into a carbonated soft drink. The Thompson School was named after him as a token of appreciation for his generous act.
Arlington has rural areas with no industry or agriculture but one time had several flour mills, and ice industry shipping ice as far away as India. It houses nine public and two private schools and is a great place to settle a family in.
